Money saving tips for fisherman!
1. Look for deals on tackle – Different times of the year manufactures will put items on sale. This is good time to stock up and save money. Even though you may not need that item right now, but you know you will use them later. Good example, reels: companies will put the 2011 reels on sale right before they introduce the new line for 2012. Soft plastics are constantly going on sale at different times of the year so keep an eye out for these opportunities to stock up.
2. To trailer or by water – Trucks get twice the miles per gallon than today’s outboards. So it pays off to put more miles on the road instead of the water. Often I will trailer to other areas of the lake in order to save boat fuel and outboard oil.
3. Eat light on the water – Eat light for lunch such as a small turkey sandwich, peanuts, or the famous P&J sandwich. But come dinner time I like to eat a good meal which helps provide energy for the next long day on the water.
4. Rods & Reels – Take care of your rods and reels. Most reels today will last a long long time if you keep them clean and lubricated. With rods, check the eyes and look for burrs and abrasions that might cut your line, But most important check the tips. Tips are the most abused part of a rod.
5. Take care of your batteries – Batteries are the life line of your boat and they require attention from time to time. Check your water levels frequently and make sure to use distilled water to refill the terminals. Most guys don’t check their batteries until it’s too late and they get stranded on the lake and are late for weigh-in.
6. How big is big enough – Twenty-one-foot bass boats are nice but not a necessity. The most popular size boat on the tour today is the 20 footer. Most 20 footers have plenty of storage for tackle and rods. Plus they still handle rough water and will get you back to the bank safely.
7. Boat Covers – Boat covers are expensive but will provide great protection form the elements and road grime while trailering. Try and buy a cover when you purchase a boat. Sometimes dealers will throw in the cover in order to finalize the sale. But try and buy the cover that the boat manufacture makes specifically for their brand.
